Around 350 years ago, settlers who established Salem decided to find an area that was less populated with a greener landscape. They sourced the land from the indigenous population, and it was known as Saugus, where the Sagamores lived. This area now would be Nahant, Lynnfield, Saugus, and Swampscott. In 1630, it was officially deemed the Town of Saugus, which was a year later. The first official minister, Samuel Whiting, came from King’s Lynn, and the name was changed to Lynn in 1637 to honor him.
